Dianna has run a training program for the volunteers of Distinctive Learning Society, a local NGO providing community-based services to children with special learning needs and their families. Professional Workshop - A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words: Visual Supports for Children with Autism (@HK)

Pat Mirenda is a Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education, and Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Collaboration in Autism (CIRCA) at the University of British Columbia. In this workshop, Dr. Mirenda explained why visual supports are useful for many children with autism and how they can be used to reduce behaviour problems and improve communication. Examples were provided for visual supports that help with transitions between activities that help children complete tasks independently. She also talked about “visual maps”. She used various examples to explain “visual maps” that can be used to help children understand the consequences of their behaviour.

Given the international experience, Dianna has supported families of many different cultures. She realizes that in today's globalized world, it is extremely important for ABA practitioners to be culturally sensitive in order to create sustainable changes in families with children with special needs. Dianna shared with the participants from all over the globe the implications of the findings from recent research on this topic. Her presentation also demonstrated how to apply these research findings in practice, in which the implementation of ABA to support families and children and to improve their quality of life was revealed through a case example.

ABA Training for Teachers and Doctors of Children with Autism in Tianjin (@China)

Dianna was invited to provide a week-long training for special school teachers, people working in rehabilitation centres, maternal and child health doctors, normal pre-school teachers, and some parents in Tianjin. As the Tianjin government has launched a big MCH (maternal and child health) based early identification of autism, more cases of autism are expected to be identified in the near future. Foreseeing the needs for intervention, Dianna and her colleagues from Canada, Noreen and Parbs, were invited to provide an intensive training for related parties in Tianjin.
The training was a great success. We were touched by the enthusiasm of the participants. Despite the hot weather and the long days, they continued to strive and showed us their eagerness to learn. They were also very analytical and asked amazing questions. We were inspired by our participants. Thanks!
